China blocks access to all language editions of Wikipedia

People in China are no longer able to access any Wikipedia pages from within the country — with all language editions reportedly being blocked by the Chinese government.

Internet users who go to the site are now greeted with a connection error, according to PC Magazine, which cites internet monitoring services operated by the Tor Project and

It appears that China has been blocking user access since April 22.

“Measurements show that many of these Wikipedia domains were previously accessible, but all measurements collected…present the same DNS anomalies for all Wikipedia sub-domains,” the Tor Project reports. “The few DNS anomalies that occurred in previous months were false positives, whereas the DNS anomalies from April 2019 onwards show that Wikipedia domains are blocked by means of DNS injection.”

According to PC Mag, some experts believe China’s ban could coincide with the upcoming 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, which happened on June 4, 1989.

The Communist nation has reportedly shut down pages in the past that have criticized it. It was already blocking access to the Mandarin-language Wiki editions.
