The Lakers and Tyronn Lue by all accounts want a piece of each other.
But on Tuesday, the two sides “reached an impasse without a deal” to make Lue the club’s next coach, ESPN reported.
Lue reuniting with LeBron James in Hollywood seemed like a slam dunk once the Lakers lost out on the Monty Williams sweepstakes last week, with the current Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach instead choosing the Phoenix Suns.
Last week, a beaming Lue was caught celebrating his birthday with a glitzy cake decorated with the Lakers’ emblem.
The holdup reportedly surrounds details of Lue’s contract, as well as his coaching staff. The Lakers apparently hope Jason Kidd, who also interviewed for the head coaching job, will join Lue’s prospective staff.
Meanwhile, James is pushing for former Bulls and Timberwolves coach Tom Thibodeau to be added to Lue’s staff, according to The Athletic.
