Aidy Bryant’s ‘Shrill’ wardrobe isn’t about size — it’s about style

Fans of Hulu’s new body-positive show “Shrill” — starring Aidy Bryant as the plus-size aspiring journalist Annie — are calling the costumes “amazing,” “flattering and fun” and “fashion-savvy” on social media.

And so they’re crushed when they find out they can’t buy them.

“I didn’t realize how many people out there were craving and needing this,” says “Shrill” stylist Amanda Needham, who custom-made the vast majority of Bryant’s costumes for the series. It was the only way Needham could think of to give the “Saturday Night Live” star the kinds of tailored and trendy clothes she envisioned Annie wearing, once she realized there weren’t a ton of such options for curvy customers.

“I swear to God, once you get to a certain size, anything after a 14, fabrics just go downhill and the shapes are more of an afterthought,” says Needham. This is nuts, she adds, because the average American woman is now a size 16.

Going into the project, Needham admits she was “naive” about the limitations of existing plus-size fashions, and just wanted the “open-minded and adventurous” Bryant to look and feel amazing on camera. To make that happen, the Portland, Ore.-based stylist called in her go-to tailor, Ahmad Daniel Santos, whom she’s worked with for over a decade.

“He was present at all the fittings with me,” she says, “and we really saw where things were hitting Aidy’s body and what she really liked.”

Together with Bryant, they dreamed up Annie’s breezy wardrobe of bright, fit-and-flare wrap dresses and colorful separates. They also mixed in covetable pieces from the few higher-end designers that do inclusive sizing, such as Rachel Antonoff, Mara Hoffman and Tanya Taylor. (An Antonoff frock goes for around $250, while Taylor’s dresses top out around $650 each.)

But beyond the high-quality fabrics and eye-catching prints, Needham says that Annie’s custom duds look so good because they fit her perfectly.

“If you study all the dresses, they hit at the same place, which is right underneath the bust,” she says. “There’s only slight gathering in the front — too much gathering or ruching will give you a maternity moment.”

She says so many manufacturers of plus-size clothing fall into the trap of assuming that all full-figured women want to hide their bodies. But as she’s learned from Bryant — and from the show’s legions of appreciative viewers who have been reaching out via Instagram and Twitter — that’s just not true.

On the contrary, she says, “Plus-size women are saying, ‘Don’t put something oversized and cheap on me.’ They’re saying, ‘Let me celebrate this, because I’m actually OK with it, and you should be, too.’ ”

Needham hopes the fashion industry will “step it up,” but in the meantime, she suggests that plus-size women buying clothes off the rack keep a good tailor on speed dial. It’s not crazy expensive to have dresses, for example, tailored at the waist to define — not camouflage — one’s curves.

She says it’s worth it to spring for a professional instead of attempting a quick fix at home.

“Adding a belt just feels like a simplified version of what you need,” she says. “Let’s have things be more fitted to accentuate your body.”

While most of Annie’s specially made styles aren’t available in stores, we pulled some adorable looks for less, inspired by some of her chicest moments.
